The Kia Optima has been a long-standing alternative to established Japanese D-Segment sedans such as the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. The third-generation Kia Optima (TF) – the first to take on the K5 nameplate – marked a significant leap forward in design, build quality as well as premium features for its time.
Today, with prices starting at just RM 30k as advertised on the WapCar’s Cars for Sale page – the Optima K5 remains a great value bargain that has aged gracefully and also has a good track record of reliability.
This makes it a good choice for buyers who need the size and space of a D-Segment sedan but at the most affordable prices. Let’s take a closer look.
Overview
Launched in Malaysia in 2011, the Kia Optima K5 featured a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine producing 165 PS and 198 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Optima K5 was available in a single variant priced at RM 143k.
It came equipped with a comprehensive feature list, including HID headlights with DRLs, 18-inch wheels, leather upholstery, an 8-speaker Infinity audio setup, paddle shifters, dual-zone auto air-conditioning, and a panoramic glass sunroof.

For safety, the Optima K5 was equipped with 6 airbags, Electronic Stability Control, ABS, EBD, TCS, brake assist, and hill-start assist.
In 2014, the facelifted Kia Optima K5 was launched with several enhancements and updates to improve its aesthetics and functionality. The facelift model continued with the same 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Exterior changes included revised front and rear bumpers, new fog lamps featuring 4 LED clusters on each side, and DRL strips moved to the top section of the headlamps. At the rear, updates included a new diffuser garnish, a sharper trunk lid design, and new LED combination lamps. The car also received a fresh 5-spoke 18-inch wheel design.
Inside, the Optima K5 was updated with redesigned front seats, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, and a drive mode selector with 3 modes – Normal, Eco, and Sport.
The facelifted Kia Optima K5 was priced at RM 150k without insurance and remained on sale until around May 2017, when its successor was launched in Malaysia.
Why should I buy a used Kia Optima K5?
Well, it offers massive bang for your buck. It’s a great-looking D-segment sedan that arguably has aged the best among its contemporaries and matches, and in some cases surpasses, its rivals in terms of features.
For instance, a 2014 Toyota Camry 2.0 features a 4-speed automatic transmission, whereas the Optima K5 offers a smooth-shifting 6-speed automatic for greater efficiency and performance. Add to this, the Optima K5 today costs up to 25 percent less than an equivalent Camry of the same production year, making it a great value proposition.
And despite what some may still tell you, the Kia Optima K5 has a good track record for reliability, with easy access to parts, making maintenance relatively straightforward.
Conclusion
It is wise to consider the model year and specific trim level that best fits your needs and budget. As always, getting a comprehensive inspection by a qualified mechanic or third party before purchase is advisable to ensure the vehicle’s condition.
