Stellantis is recalling 194,000 Jeep 4xe plug-in hybrid SUVs globally after 13 reports of battery fires, and is telling owners to park outside and away from structures, as well as avoid charging, until a fix is implemented.

Stellantis confirmed that 154,032 U.S.-market vehicles are affected, as well as 14,038 in Canada, 673 in Mexico, and 25,502 outside North America. These include 2020-2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe and 2022-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe models. Stellantis estimates that 5% of the recalled vehicles may have the defect.

Details of the exact issue weren’t available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) weren’t available at the time of publication, but Stellantis said the recalled stemmed from an internal investigation that discovered the fires.

“A remedy is imminent and affected customers will be notified when they may schedule service,” the release said. Owners can contact Jeep customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or visit Stellantis’ recall website for more information.

In the meantime, Stellantis is advising owners not to charge their vehicles, as fire risk is reduced when the battery is depleted. The automaker is also advising owners to park away from structures and other vehicles for the time being.

Jeep introduced the Wrangler 4xe for the 2020 model year and it soon became the bestselling plug-in hybrid in the U.S. An update for the 2024 model year effectively gave the Wrangler 4xe a price cut by introducing a cheaper base model. A similar plug-in hybrid system, which aims to preserve Jeep’s signature off-road capability, was added to the midsize Grand Cherokee for 2022. Jeep has confirmed that a Gladiator 4xe pickup will arrive in later 2025.
