Classic Revival: Blackout Customs BMW K100RS

Classic Revival: Blackout Customs BMW K100RS

There’s something undeniably magical about the classics. In the early eighties, BMW released its K100RS. The landmark sport tourer was powered by the manufacturer’s inline 4 ‘brick’ motor and benefitted from a raft of engineering updates that greatly improved performance and ease of servicing. It wasn’t without flaws, but these could easily be overlooked once time was spent in the saddle. Today the BMW K100RS can still hold its own and for those wanting a ride with style and substance and a well-maintained example can make a practical daily.

Betting on a tried and tested classic can pay off in the most spectacular ways. Marcel Galuszka and the Blackout Customs crew took on a project that embodies that philosophy and the result was this timeless ‘custom 84 BMW K100RS. This project was about merging classic design with modern functionality and it’s resulted in a motorcycle that is both a nod to the past and a leap into the future.

“This build had a very reasonable budget, so the focus was mainly on preserving and using as many original parts as possible,” Marcel explains. “This bike is functional and classic without unnecessary frills.” Despite this approach, there were of course parts of the 40-year-old Beemer that were beyond repair. So when Marcel came across anything unsalvagable it was replaced by better-performing modern components.

A standout of this project is the new electrical system. Marcel has installed a bespoke wiring harness and integrated Motogadget components, including the mo-unit blue, bar end turn signals, and tiny dual-function LED lighting at the rear. Up front, a new LED headlight and Daytona speedometer were added.

The BMW’s frame has also undergone some changes. For the first time, Marcel opted for a stepped subframe design. This has resulted in a unique, modern silhouette for the 40-year-old donor. The frame was machined, modified at the back, and finished in fresh black powder coat. The engine, painted black to match, sits beneath the stock fuel tank which has been treated to an Audi Tango Red scheme that pops against the all-black chassis.

No custom build is without its challenges, and this project was no exception. The most significant hurdle faced was the condition of the engine covers. Badly damaged, they were initially flagged for replacement. However, with some special care, Blackout Customs managed to restore them, preserving an integral original element of the bike.

In contrast, several aftermarket and custom-made updates take this build to the next level. The new handlebars provide optimal comfort and have been finished using Motogadget grips, new levers, and High Side bar-end mirrors. The custom seat, upholstered in Alcantara, merges seamlessly with the fuel tank and follows the stepped line of the subframe. Beneath the saddle lies a bespoke battery box that houses a lightweight lithium battery.

The final result is nothing short of spectacular and according to Marcel, “The motorcycle has a perfect sound after shortening the original exhaust. Handling is great because the bike is very light and it puts a smile on your face when you’re out on the road.”

Thanks to Blackout Customs this eighties sport tourer has taken on a whole new look and we wholeheartedly approve.
